Why make the daily effort to be a wise women? Why put so much effort on behaving correctly every. single. day? Is it really worth it? Yes! Read on…
Welcome back to this little series. If you are looking for the first installment, you can get that here with Part 1: It’s Your Choice to be a Wise Woman.
When we talk about wisdom, Proverbs is the book to study. It’s chock full of verses that encourage believers to seek wisdom:
- Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not…
- Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
- Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom… Proverbs 4:5-7
- …better to get wisdom than gold. Proverbs 16:16
- He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul… Proverbs 19:8
- Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established. Proverbs 24:3
Does This Feel Like a Burden?
We know that as Christians we need to seek wisdom, but when put into the context of continually being a wise woman, we may feel burdened. Living day in a day out as a wise woman seems a daunting task, similar to that of seeking to be a Proverbs 31 woman. But we need not be afraid or overwhelmed by the possibility. Trust in the LORD, and do good… Psalm 37:3
For those of us who know to do good, and then don’t follow through, it is sin to us (see James 4:17). If our reason for forsaking the way of wisdom is that it seems like too much work, we are actually fooling ourselves. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Proverbs 8:33. We are daughters of the most high God, we were never created to take the easy road, or the easy chair.
Do we sit in the recliner with the remote in hand at 2 in the afternoon when there is work to be done? Yikes! See, this isn’t the way of the wise woman. The wise woman sees the work that needs to be done:
- Intimately loving and serving a husband
- Loving, training, disciplining and educating children
- Keeping a home organized and tidy
- Preparing nutritious meals
- Showing hospitality
and she follows through. She is not idle, she is not lazy, her arms are strong for her tasks and she diligently seeks good works. She rejoices with thoughts of the future. This is one capable, and self-motivated, woman! This is cause for delight, for celebration. There is so much here to inspire and encourage us. Do you see the vision? The LORD has given us such a remarkable calling!
What You Will Gain by Living Daily as a Wise Woman
Now if I were to appeal to you on a fundamental level to encourage you to live wisely, I would give you all the reasons why you’d want to seek this path of wisdom. Reasons such as;
- You’ll be happier (Proverbs 3:13)
- You’ll increase in learning (Proverbs 1:5)
- You’ll inherit honor (Proverbs 3:35)
- Your lips will disperse knowledge (Proverbs 15:7)
- It’s the fountain of life (Proverbs 13:14).
There are so many good reasons to live a life as a wise woman. Your husband will be a better man. Your children will be blessed and will be encouraged to themselves be wise. We want to model wisdom to our children, where else will they see it?
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the LORD is. Ephesians 5:15-17
Fools Despise Wisdom
Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Proverbs 14:1
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. ~Colossians 2:8
The world says to leave your home and leave your children in the care of “professionals.” God’s Word says to build your home and raise your own children. This is a vast contrast.
In Conclusion
Ladies, I’m excited about the possibilities of living daily as wise women! What a difference we can make in our families! What a legacy to leave, and what a beautiful, godly way to reach down through the generations as we teach our sons and daughters to live the same.
Next week I will share more on the activities of the wise woman, compare a wise woman’s day with the foolish woman’s and show you how to identify the wise woman of the Bible.
Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. ~Proverbs 3:13-18
